Hoskins came into the 2014 draft ranked 170th, according to MLB.com. The Phillies took him with the 142nd pick in the draft, roughly a round ahead of his projection. While Hoskins has played the corner outfield at Sacramento State and in the Cape Cod League, his speed, or lack there of, have pretty much limited him defensively to first base.

It’s very clear that Hoskins had an excellent approach at the plate, but his calling card is his power potential. In 213 collegiate at bats, Hoskins hit 18 doubles and 12 home runs. That’s 30 extra base hits out of 68 total hits. While those numbers are impressive, don’t expect him to be in beast mode for his career.

While his Williamsport numbers are a considerable drop off, keep in mind playing professionally is basically playing a full second season for the 21-year-old. Hoskins will probably start 2015 in Lakewood, and like Chris Oliver, if he can handle it, he may make the jump to Clearwater in the second half. Unlike Oliver, I wouldn’t be surprised if Hoskins spent the entire season at Lakewood, as there is no reason whatsoever to rush him with Ryan Howard, Darin Ruf, and Maikel Franco all able to play first and all under team control for the forseeable future.
