The Final Four

March 31st, 2011 by Leo | Comments Off on The Final Four | Filed in Basketball, College Sports

This weekend hosts the coveted final four as the March Madness run comes to an end.  This years final four consists of the University of Kentucky vs University of Connecticut (8:45 PM ET on Sat. April 2) and Butler vs Virginia Commonwealth University(6:00 PM ET on Sat. April 2).   The winners of these two match-ups will meet on Monday April 4 at 9 PM ET on CBS.

I will give you my prediction on the games but fully admit I am not a basketball expert and many may disagree with my picks.  You are encouraged to make your own comments and thoughts on who you believe will win.  I believe Kentucky and Butler will win their games and Kentucky will win the National Championship.

While details have not officially been confirmed as to the location or the unveiling, the Phillies have announced that they are primed to receive the Harry Kalas statue. While the goal of $80,000 has yet to be reached, it appears the 7.5 foot statue has been completed. Rumor has it that McFaddens at the Ballpark will be holding a fundraiser tonight with the goal being the balance.

Countdown to Opening Day: 1 Day

March 31st, 2011 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Countdown to Opening Day: 1 Day | Filed in General

So here we are. The last day before the return of “The Show” for the Phils. There are no games schedule for the Phillies today. Technically, today is the first day of the baseball season, but to Phillies fans, April Fool’s Day is the target. So as the Opening Series is put in jeopardy with the various forms of precipitation, the final edition of countdown for 2011 will be my opinion of how the season will pan out. (more…)

Phillies vs. Astros Preview

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Houston Astros

Citizens Bank Park

April 1-3, 2011

The Phillies open the season against the Houston Astros. In game 1, Roy Halladay matches up against a familiar face in Brett Myers. Myers had a less than stellar spring, going 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00. The former Phil is coming off of his best year in the majors going 14-8 with an ERA of 3.14.

The Astros have five position players who have hit Halladay pretty well in limited atbats. Carlos Lee is the only Astro with more than eight career plate appearances against Halladay. So it is very likely that Halladay gets the best on some of the inexperienced players.

Herndon, Martinez, Orr IN, Stutes OUT

March 30th, 2011 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Herndon, Martinez, Orr IN, Stutes OUT | Filed in General

After releasing Luis Castillo earlier in the day, the Phillies announced their 25-man roster. Rule V pick, Michael Martinez and Pete Orr will be on Charlie Manuel’s bench. Wilson Valdez is going to be the Opening Day 2B on Friday. Orr and Martinez beat out Delwyn Young and Josh Barfield for the final two spots on the roster. I wonder if the Phillies are going for versatility and defense over offense with these picks. Valdez, Martinez, and Orr collectively can play every position but pitcher and catcher.

The final spot in the bullpen saw David Herndon beat out Michael Stutes. Stutes had a stellar spring with a sub-one ERA. Herndon had a very nice spring and probably got a vote of confidence due to Charlie’s loyalty and Herndon’s presence in 2010. Either way, it looks like the Phillies will have some depth waiting in the wings in Lehigh Valley.
